2007 National Awards
Ms Jane Clarke
Northrop Grumman Corporation
NDTA Distinguished Service Award
Ms. Clarke made significant contributions to the overall NDTA program through her concerted effort in coordinating, managing, and directing the monthly meetings. In her role as the Chapter Secretary, she aptly controlled the dynamics of the monthly agenda while smoothly and efficiently coordinating activities. As Secretary, she was responsible for tracking and archiving all our meeting minutes and ensuring things were recorded. She did a superb job of making sure we had the right information tracked. Although Jane has significant responsibility already in the chapter, she took the lead in setting up the Scholarship and Awards Dinner as part of our National Transportation (NT) Week activities. She superbly coordinated with the facility to ensure the best design and settings for the activities. Her leadership is evident in every facet of our NT Week program. She assisted in creating the NT Week Pamphlet that explained all the activities, our guest speaker, and acknowledged our sponsors for the tremendous job they are doing in supporting the chapter. Jane also volunteered her time to support the NT Week golf tournament. She worked with others to develop a list of sponsors that she would ask to support the Golf tournament. She further personally contacted each of these potential sponsors and asked for some type of donation to the scholarship event.
Mr Ken Thomas
Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC)
NDTA Distinguished Service Award
Mr. Thomas made significant contributions to the overall NDTA program through his concerted effort in working with all our corporate sponsors over the past year as well as for the previous 4 years. In his role as the Vice President for Industry, he worked closely with the corporate community in supporting the overall corporate sponsorship within the chapter. As an invaluable member of the Board of Directors, Ken has always been about lending a helping hand and supporting the organization. He was always willing to support the development of new and inventive programs that were able to carry us forward. He was always there to provide advice and counsel on things that he had seen over many years in service to the NDTA. In order to bring in additional sponsorship for the chapter, Ken led the development of an annual business charter and supported the development of a business group that would advise the Board of Directors. Their purpose was to ensure that we were meeting the corporate needs as they invested in our program. As such we began the year with several meetings that developed the charter and established expectations that would carry the group through the rest of the year. We established the goals and objectives from both a chapter perspective and a corporate perspective on their expectations as well as developing a plan that would support each part of the program. To date the program has been a great success and has yielded a 15% increase in the number of table assignments sold for our monthly meetings.
Mr Krishan Kumar
Lockheed Martin Corporation
NDTA Distinguished Service Award
Mr Kumar has made significant contributions to the overall NDTA program through his concerted effort in formulating new membership tactics and keeping track of our membership rosters. As the membership committee chairman, Krishan coordinates the membership drive meeting that we hold in January. We have designed it as an open forum that is free to all members and nonmembers for us to engage in transportation discussions. We have created a “cocktail hour” environment that allows everyone to mingle and meet with various members to get to know our membership and feel comfortable. Krishan focuses the effort on the membership benefits and works to get those potential new members signed up. Our design is to focus on the new potential members and give them a good impression of our programs and activities that support the civil and military communities including our supply chain speaker series, National Transportation Week, A-35 activities and our scholarship programs. During his tenure as the membership chairman we have seen a 20% growth in membership and a significant increase in the number of attendees to our programs. Krishan is an avid A-35 member as well. He works with our A35 chair to support a variety of events including our Mentor-Protégé program. The program allows for our experienced transportation experts to provide advice to those that are up and coming in their career. Krishan has used these events to help himself as well provide a better understanding of how it relates to his career. Also he has worked with many of the A-35 members to support can food drives that we have had for the less fortunate.
Mr Tom Loeffler
GS13, USTRANSCOM J5
NDTA Distinguished Service Award
During Tom’s tenure he has made lasting improvements in the fiscal solvency of the Chapter’s Scholarship Fund. Through his efforts, this annual event, (the only source of revenue for the scholarship committee), has consistently helped raise over $10,000 each year – and the last two years over $13,000. Tom’s untiring efforts on behalf of the Chapter have enabled the Scott-St Louis Chapter to consistently provide five or six scholarships to deserving students annually for the past four years – each in excess of $2,000. He has diligently worked the local corporate sponsor community to provide an ever increasing amount of prizes and sponsorship that supports the overwhelming response to the tournament. Our tournament has by far been the most inventive in providing opportunity for all participants. This has brought recognition and increased support to the Chapter scholarship program. His leadership has brought together a cadre of dedicated volunteers that comb the Metro St Louis area for additional prizes, ensuring that every player receives a “ditty-bag” and prizes valued at approximately half of the entrance fee.
Dr. Ik-Whan G. Kwon, PhD
St Louis University
National Defense Transportation Association Educator Distinguished Service Award
Dr Ik-Whan G. Kwon’s performance as the Director of the Consortium of Supply Chain Management Studies, St Louis University, and as a volunteer with the Scott-St. Louis Chapter of the National Defense Transportation Association helped shape our understanding of distribution principles and activities. Dr Kwon expanded his sphere of influence locally, nationally, and internationally as he provides training and education across the globe for military, commercial and academic interests. The Consortium for Supply Chain Management Studies imparts a wealth of opportunity through academic classes in Advanced Supply Chain Management Studies and the Lean Program which are actively pursued by USTRANSCOM and Air Mobility Command. Dr Kwon is an active member of the Scott St Louis Chapter which provides us access to many distinguished speakers. Also, through our position on the Steering Committee of the CSCMS, we have now truly expanded our influence and program to the entire St Louis metro region enabling us to see a growth in overall membership due to the focus on supply chain management, and in particular, with our interest with the government.
